Dear Parents,

We had such a nice time at our Valentine party last week. The kids were so polite, using their best manners to thank classmates for giving them cards. I think everyone was excited to receive so many valentines.

As we return from celebrating the President’s holidays, we will continue to study about famous presidents as well as learn more about the job of our current president, Mr. Obama.

I am continuing to test the children for report cards. Keep practicing sounding out simple consonant-vowel-consonant words and the high frequency words that I sent home a few weeks ago. Work on numbers to 30 and their values. Also practice answering the questions: “What number comes before a specific number?” and “What number comes after a specific number?” Use a number line to help illustrate this concept.

Help your child to write a few simple sentences to make a story and then have them illustrate the story.

Have a great week!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Black

Dear Parents,

This week we will be studying China and celebrating Chinese New Year. It is the “Year of the Snake.”

During social studies, the children will learn about China and its culture.

We will read several books about children in China and their customs. The children will develop a greater understanding and appreciation of our cultural similarities and differences. Students will bring home their own books that they made about China. Ask your child to talk to you about what is in the books.

Students will have the opportunity to hear several famous Chinese folk stories. Ask your child to tell you about the story of the “Five Chinese Brothers”.

We made Chinese lanterns for an art project.

Students will make a class book about the fortune that came inside their fortune cookie.

Please send any items about China that you might have at home for sharing this week.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Black
