Five Senses

Dear Parents,

Here are some activities to do and some titles of books to read with your child as we study the “Five Senses” in our class.

The five senses include seeing, touching, smelling, tasting, and hearing. These activities will help your child develop a greater awareness of the ways in which the senses help us learn around the world.

Collage

Let your child paste bits and pieces of things on a big paper, Include such things as scraps of material, trims, buttons, sand paper, macaroni, wall paper, or seeds.

Barefooting

Let your child walk barefoot. Have him/her tell you how things feel to his/her feet: grass, gravel, cement, dirt, sand- mud, maybe?

Sound Boxes

Fill boxes with the same type and number of objects. Objects than can be uses are unpopped popcorn, rice, pins, tacks, beans, pencils, paper clips, and toothpics.

Feely Sock

Put a small object in a sock. Have your child reach in and feel the object to guess what it is.

Books

My Five Senses by Aliki
Fun With My 5 Senses: Activities to Build Learning Readiness by Sarah Williamson
Look, Listen, Taste, Touch, and Smell: Learning About Your Five Senses by Pamela Hill Nettleton
The Listening Walk by Paul Showers
First Delights: A Book About The Five Senses by Tasha Tudor
The Indoor Noisy Book by Margaret Wise Brown

I hope you and your child have some fun with these books and activities!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Deborah Black

Dear Parents,

Parent conferences begin August 24th and continue through August 31st. If you haven’t already done so, please stop by the classroom or call me to set up a time to conference. I have a conference schedule sign-up sheet on top of the kid’s cubbies. I am so excited to show you all that your child has learned so far this year and to discuss the things that we will be studying in the near future.

Also remember that school will dismiss early during parent-teacher conferencing. School will dismiss everyday at 1:05 p.m. except for next Thursday. On Thursday, school will dismiss at 1:00 p.m. Please arrive 5-10 minutes before school dismissal to help ease traffic congestion and to make sure your child is picked up on time.

You can find out more about Palmer Way School by going to the school homepage at PalmerWay.org. You can also link to my blog from PalmerWay.org by clicking on “Mrs. Black” under “Teacher Sites” on the right side of the screen. Likewise, you can link to PalmerWay.org from my weblog by clicking on the link under the “Palmer Way” header on the right of this screen.

I try to stay current on the happenings in our classroom each week. Check in often for important updates, weekly homework activities, Star Student acknowledgments, and to find links to great online resources for kids and parents.

As always, thank you for partnering with me in your child’s education!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Black

Dear Parents and Students,

The students have been very busy these days. We are working on letter identification, letter writing, and the sounds of the letters. We focus on a new letter daily and review letters previously learned.

Please be sure that your child is forming letters correctly on the lines.  Refer to the correct letter formation sheet which I gave to you on “Back To School” night. Be sure that your child is beginning the letter in the correct place on the line and he/she has proper letter formation when writing. Remember to use the terms: Head line, Belt line, and Foot line when showing your child how to make the letters.

Please study and make flashcards of the words “I, see, a, like” and practice, practice, practice. Also, be sure that you are helping your child to read the story charts from the homework packet. Make them into a book and read them nightly. Make sure that your child touches the words as he/she says them.

Everyone has learned to read their own name as well as many of their classmate’s names.

We have a new dance teacher, Miss Cibel, who is working with our class every Friday through the month of October. The children began dance class last week and the kids really enjoyed it. They are so creative with the movements of their bodies. Be sure and ask your child what he/she learned in dance class each Friday. These kids are amazing and so talented.

Have a great week!
Mrs. Black
