Kindergarten News

Dear Parents,

Parent conferences begin September 16th and continue through September 23rd. If you haven’t already done so, please stop by the classroom or call me to set up a time to conference. I have a conference schedule sign-up sheet on top of the kid’s cubbies. I am so excited to show you all that your child has learned this year and to discuss the things that we will be studying in the near future.

Also remember that school will dismiss early during parent-teacher conferencing. We will dismiss everyday at 1:05 p.m. except for next Thursday. On Thursday, we will dismiss at 1:00 p.m.

Five Senses

Dear Parents,

Here are some activities to do and some titles of books to read with your child as we study the “Five Senses” in our class.

The five senses include seeing, touching, smelling, tasting, and hearing. These activities will help your child develop a greater awareness of the ways in which the senses help us learn around the world.

Collage

Let your child paste bits and pieces of things on a big paper, Include such things as scraps of material, trims, buttons, sand paper, macaroni, wall paper, or seeds.

Barefooting

Let your child walk barefoot. Have him/her tell you how things feel to his/her feet: grass, gravel, cement, dirt, sand- mud, maybe?

Sound Boxes

Fill boxes with the same type and number of objects. Objects than can be uses are unpopped popcorn, rice, pins, tacks, beans, pencils, paper clips, and toothpics.

Feely Sock

Put a small object in a sock. Have your child reach in and feel the object to guess what it is.

School CLOSED due to power outage

All schools in San Diego County will be closed on Friday, September 9th, 2011, due to the county wide power outage. This includes ALL public schools and preschools in the National School District as well as ALL public schools in the Sweetwater Unified High School District.

Palmer Way will be closed. Please do not send your children to school.

School will resume on Monday, September 12th, 2011.

Kindergarten News

Dear Parents,

We continue to study letter identification, sounds, and the proper formation of the letters. Please look at the letter that your child has worked on each day at school and practice it more at home.

Our “Safety Unit” is in progress.

We are currently studying about fire safety.

Your children learned to dial “911” in an emergency. We discussed specifically what is meant by the term “emergency”.





Students practiced the “Stop, Drop, and Roll” procedure in the classroom. Please have your child show you how it is done. Be sure that he/she is covering their face as they roll.

We also learned to apply cold water immediately to a burn.


We learned about kitchen safety. They understand not to touch the stove and why it is important for parents to keep the handles of pots turned away from the edge of the stove. They know that irons, barbecues, and heaters are not to be touched.

The children learned not to play with matches.

Students learned the importance of planning an escape route if there is a fire in the home. Please help your child to develop a plan in case of fire.

Kindergarten News

Dear Parents,

We are busy studying the letters and their sounds. So far, we have worked on the letters: Bb, Cc, Hh, Ii, Jj, Ll, Mm, Nn, Oo, Pp, Rr, Ss, Tt, Uu, Vv, Ww, Xx, and Yy. This week we will study Aa, Dd, Gg, Kk, and Qq.

Next, we will begin our review and work again on all letters, their sounds, and focus on proper formation of the letters on the lines. I have attached a paper on the proper letter formation (I also gave this out on “Back to School” night). This will help you in practicing with your child at home. The attention that you can give to your child is of great value when working on handwriting! Thanks for your help!

We will begin our unit on “Safety” this week. Please talk with your child about the work that he/she is bringing home. Discuss safety rules and talk about why it is important to follow the rules.

Please read the “Math at Home” letter to help you with fun activities to do to reinforce the latest math skills that we will be working on in class.

Study the words: I, See, A, and Like. Please make flashcards of the words and practice, practice, practice. Also be sure that you are helping your child to read the story charts from the homework packets. Make them into a book and read them nightly. Make sure that your child touches the words as he/she says them.
